Window Dilemma...

I am in need of a little advice so I am throwing it out there in hopes that someone will come to
my rescue.  This is my kitchen window. My only kitchen window. No , it is not above
the sink where I would like it, but nevertheless it is a window amd I am very thankful for it.

I have had this vintage shutter up along with these curtains for several years because I love
the look so much...however...that being said it is time for a change. I still LOVE the shutter
there, but think I want different curtains. I would love NO CURTAINS at all, but I really don't
have a choice because the afternoon sun really shines in this room.

Question: Leave the shutter, curtains...take it all down? Sill length curtains,
floor length, what kind of fabric?? HELP please!! I have even considered
leaving the shutter up , but adding brackets so it is slanted down like an
awning and adding some chippy , shappy posts or half posts
to the sides.

The ideal solution is in a couple years to tear the whole kitchen apart, put in a new
window and on and on, but I just don't know if I have the umph for that at my age.
We do all of our projects ourselves and I am just getting tired. :)

So glad my herbs were on their best behavior the day I took these photos. Sometimes
they don't get the attention that they deserve and they get kinda droopy looking. :)

I like the idea of the shutters and a bracket stiking out like an awning. But I still think you need a little curtain. Not floor length.

The ideas you have sound great to me--like the post idea. Longer curtains would look great. I love lace so lace curtains are my choice a lot of the time. Have fun!

I have the right solution for you. A blind and "Alvine Spets" curtains from IKEA. The perfect match. I also have that in my bedroom. Good luck. Love Petra

Sandi... My eyes are instantly drawn to the deeper linen or burlap towels and accessories... Love the shutter... you could use burlap or a small cheap canvas drop cloth to get a shade or two darker for you curtain..a french feed sack would look awesome also... I am sure you will come up with just the right look....Prepare yourself for the heat tomorrow and yes even today...what has happened to our summer.... We are so desperate here and the weather alert is we will loose many crops and vegetation this week and next with the extreme heat....so sad to see this happen ending with not a thing to do but pray....I have said so many the past couple weeks I wonder if the inbox is filled up...

You must keep the shutter, but what about a lift?

Hi Sandi. I just finished going through the same issue in my LR. I wanted shutters so badly but they just would not work, so I ended up with insulated Roman Blinds. They aren't as pretty but they are very functional. Just my 2 cents.

I'd leave up the shutter since you still love it and it's SO cute. What about a fabric shade? You could pull it down when the sun is there and then up when you want the full view?

Love the shutters, maybe some curtains to soften it.
Like the idea!

Oh...decisions, decisions!
Hmmm...I like Lauren's idea of a shade ~ how about since you like the shutter...putting one on each side. Then you can hang a curtain valance (maybe a cute dropcloth version) just above the window to give it the illusion of being a bigger window. Couple all that with the shade and you have a new look! Or, maybe not!

Hey Sandi - what about bifold shutters on the sides of the window that you can open and shut when you need to? That way it'll give the look of no curtains, but will filter out the sunshine during the day?

Hi Sandi! I love the shutter, too! I think I would leave it as is and just change the curtains! Could you raise the shutter a bit without exposing the window frame? And I think I would stick with a light color for the curtains...drop cloth would be cool! Can't wait to see what you do!! You have great style...trust your instincts!!
Blessings,
Becky

I would raise the shutter as high above the window as possible with just a few inches to hide a rolling shade bracket. Rolling shades can be cut to custom length and width at your home store. It is easiest to cover the entire blind with fabric, perhaps the printed burlap, or linen on which you have written an inspirational quote. Just spray with fabric adhesive. Now you have a cute blind that can be pulled up out of the way when you want the sunshine. You could also etch a pretty lacy pattern directly on the glass of your window to provide interest when the shade is raised. Lovely kitchen!

I like the idea of turning the shutters into an awning.
